Bears are an incredible resource that is greatly underutilized in California. In the 2020 bear season California only harvested 919 of the 1700 bear quota biologists sought to harvest. This has been a trend since California outlawed the use of dogs in the harvest of bears. Bear numbers have been steadily on the increase ever since.

The California Rifle and Pistol Association is fortunate to have one of the most knowledgeable and ethical bear hunters in the west joining us for an afternoon to share his experiences with you!

Mr. John W. Kunkle is a retired 30 year veteran California Peace Officer and served most of his police career in the Sierra Mountain Foothills area. He was also a volunteer California Hunter Education Instructor in the mid-2000’s for the California Fish & Game Department in Folsom, CA. Currently, John works for the Idaho Department of Fish & Game as a Hunter Safety Education Technician and Range Master. He is a life-long outdoorsman who grew up hunting and fishing in rural Pennsylvania. Since the 1980’s, John has hunted throughout the western U.S. and enjoys hunting Black Bear more than any other big game. 

Mr. Kunkle successfully took his first Black Bear with the aid of hounds and became an active houndsman for years afterwards. Since then John has dedicated much of his time to teaching the fine art of bear hunting to others and sharing his passion.

This webinar will focus various bear habitat types, bear sign, hunting techniques such as spot & stalk, predator calling and game care. John considers the whole bear to be valuable and prides himself on ethically utilizing the entire animal!
